He leaned motionless against a massive stack of amplifiers- except for his hands, a twitching, shredding blur. It was as if Richie Blackmore, Deep Purple guitarist, wanted to climb into his own sound and couldn't get close enough to the wailing speakers. It was 1974. Blackmore later said he just wanted to make as much noise and play as fast and loud as possible. That was obvious at the time. And, he exuded... "Rock Star"... casting long shadows from every angle for a college newspaper shooter lucky enough to get a back stage pass to The Golden Age of Rock Gods and their deafening music.
