Years ago, my local paper ran a story about homelessness. In one photo a woman lay splayed and unconscious in a MacDonald’s toilet stall. I was appalled at the invasion of her privacy. The photograph remained with me. I decided to meet unhoused people, get to know them, and make portraits that reveal their dignity. At first, I used only a handheld camera. But out of respect for the cooperation of my subjects, I wanted the photographs to be excellent. I now arrive each week with a portable studio. I produce fifteen to twenty prints each week.
