Abraham Arnaqaq, an Inuit elder in Pangnirtung, Baffin Island, Nunavut, took me out on the ice to hunt for seal. First he set a net using traditional methods, ingeniously pouring sea water over the ice anchor, to instantly freeze it in place under -40degree celsius conditions. We then rendez-vous'd with his friends at the floe edge to patiently wait for seal to emerge from the fog bank. Three generations of Inuit men were out that day, some of the youngest on their very first hunt. Back at home, he demonstrates to his grandchildren a traditional Inuit game using seal bones.
