Before anything, there were mountains. Before the machine, man was connected directly with nature, with the real world. Mans existence and survival were mediated by the landscape around him and the mountains beyond. Much like architecture, it fostered guidance and direction, it provided both a sense of wonder and awe, a desire to reach something bigger than the self. At its core, the mountain was an archetypal symbol that encompassed the idea of ascension and journey. A pairing between man and the world, a seeking for transcendence, something synonymous with life itself.
